Wikidata vs. Wikipedia: structured data vs. narrative
The two projects look similar but serve machines very differently. The distinction is why Wikidata is treated as an entity signal in its own right, not just as a companion to a Wikipedia article:
- Wikipedia, narrative prose written for human readers, where facts are embedded in sentences and a machine must parse the text to extract them.
- Wikidata, a knowledge base that can be read and edited by both humans and machines, where the same facts are stored as discrete, structured statements a computer can process and reuse directly.
That structure is the point: imposing a high degree of organization on the data lets third parties, including search and AI engines, process and reuse it without interpreting prose.

What a Wikidata item looks like
Each entity on Wikidata is a single item with its own page. Two features make that item machine-readable:
- A unique persistent identifier (QID), a positive integer prefixed with the letter “Q” that names the entity unambiguously, independent of how it is spelled or described in any language.
- Linked statements and identifiers, machine-readable facts and connections that tie the entity to related entities and to its records in other databases.
So where Wikipedia would say, in a sentence, that a company was founded in a given year, the equivalent Wikidata item carries that as a structured statement attached to the entity’s QID, ready for a machine to read.
Why it matters for entity recognition
Because the engines and Google’s Knowledge Panel read Wikidata directly, ensuring a client’s Wikidata item is complete, accurate, and well-linked is an important component of entity optimization. The structured item gives Google and AI engines a machine-readable anchor for the entity that does not depend on a machine correctly parsing Wikipedia’s prose.
