How do we build notability if we don’t have it yet?

Quick answer

Notability is built through sustained, substantive third-party coverage: in-depth pieces in major independent outlets such as Bloomberg, Reuters, or the Wall Street Journal; independent industry recognition (established awards, analyst reports); or academic coverage treating the subject directly. Press releases, wire syndications of company announcements, and sponsored content do not count, wherever they appear. For borderline subjects, 12 to 18 months of consistent effort is typical.

Building notability is a press and authority program, not a Wikipedia program. The coverage has to exist in the real world first; the Wikipedia article follows once the source record supports it.

Not all coverage is equal. The higher the tier, the more weight Wikipedia editors give the source. Sources below the dividing line are excluded from notability calculations no matter where they appear.

What counts toward notability

Substantive coverage in major independent outlets
In-depth pieces in publications with established editorial standards and a record of fact-checking: Bloomberg, Reuters, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Associated Press, and their equivalents in other markets. The piece has to be about the subject, not just quoting a spokesperson inside an unrelated story.
Independent industry recognition
Inclusion in authoritative rankings or analyst reports where the selection is editorially generated, not purchased. Awards from established independent bodies count; sponsored “best of” lists and pay-to-play rankings do not.
Trade press coverage
Useful for certain claims such as industry context, market position, and product detail, but Wikipedia applies a stricter standard for notability itself under WP:NCORP, and trade coverage alone rarely clears the bar for companies without mainstream press alongside it.
Academic or research coverage
Counts where the subject is treated substantively as a case study, research subject, or cited example. Passing citations in footnotes do not.

What does not count

Press releases and wire syndications
A company announcement distributed on PR Newswire, Business Wire, or GlobeNewswire and republished across dozens of sites is one source, not dozens. Wikipedia’s guidelines are explicit that a story from one news organization reprinted in multiple outlets carries the weight of a single source. Press releases “cannot be used to support claims of notability.”
Sponsored and native advertising content
Advertorials, paid placements, and native content are not independent, whichever outlet hosts them. They do not count toward notability.
The company’s own materials
The corporate website, official press releases, executive interviews commissioned by the company, and the company’s social accounts are primary sources. They can support factual claims such as dates, names, and product descriptions, but cannot establish notability on their own.
Passing mentions
A Wall Street Journal article that quotes an executive as one voice among many in an industry roundup does not establish notability for the company. Coverage has to treat the subject directly and in depth.

Cadence and duration

Quality and consistency both matter. A single in-depth Bloomberg profile is stronger than five trade-publication briefs, though neither is usually enough alone. Wikipedia editors look for sustained coverage over time and across editorially independent outlets, not a single news cycle or a cluster of pieces from one source. For borderline subjects, 12 to 18 months of structured press and authority work is the realistic timeline, and subjects starting from a thin base often take longer.
