How do communications professionals measure the search impact of their media hits?

Quick answer

Measure it in three layers: whether the placements rank on the branded queries you care about, whether the AI engines cite them, and whether the downstream signals - referral traffic, branded-search lift - actually moved. Most teams stop at the first layer.

Communications teams measure the search impact of media hits in three layers. Most stop at the first one.

Three-layer diagram for measuring a media hit's search impact: Layer 1, search ranking on branded queries (IMPACT); Layer 2, AI citation.
The search impact of a media hit shows up across three stacked layers – search ranking on branded queries (IMPACT), AI citation (AIQ), and downstream signals like referral traffic and branded-search lift. Most teams stop at the first layer.

Layer 1: Search ranking on branded queries

Do the placements show up when someone runs the branded queries you care about, or are they buried under everything else competing for that name? IMPACT™ tracks this query by query, before and after the coverage runs. This is the layer most teams measure, and often the only one.

Layer 2: AI citation

Do the AI engines pull the coverage into their answers when asked about the company or executive? A placement that never enters the source pool the engines draw from has no effect on what ChatGPT or Gemini reports. AIQ shows whether the coverage made it into those answers.

Layer 3: Downstream signals

The behavioral evidence that the coverage moved something:

  • Referral traffic arriving from the placement itself.
  • Branded-search lift – more people searching the name after the coverage runs.
  • Movement in the wider entity footprint once the placement starts feeding the signals search and AI engines read.

Taken together, the three layers answer a question PR is rarely asked: did the coverage change what people find and what the engines say? A clip count on its own cannot tell you that.
