What role do Reddit and forum content play in AI model training?

Over the past two years, Reddit and forum content went from background noise to a primary AI source. A March 2026 Peec AI analysis of 30 million sources, reported by Search Engine Land, found that Reddit is the most-cited domain in AI-generated answers, followed by YouTube and LinkedIn. Semrush’s three-month study of ChatGPT citations reached the same conclusion: Reddit and Wikipedia are the two most-cited domains in ChatGPT responses. The share of AI citations attributed to social content rose steadily from late 2025 into early 2026, topping 9% by January 2026 (CMSWire / Peec AI data).

Why forum content ranks so high

• Training data. Google struck a $60 million deal with Reddit to use posts for AI training (CBS News, February 2024). OpenAI trained GPT-4 on over a million hours of YouTube video transcribed by Whisper, according to reporting in the New York Times. Forum and social content was built into these models at scale before any company had a GEO strategy.
• Retrieval for evaluative queries. The engines pull from Reddit threads, niche subreddits, and review platforms for any query with a comparative or evaluative angle: “what is it like to work at X,” “is Y a good service,” “how does Z compare to its competitors.” These are the questions investors, journalists, and candidates are asking about brands.
• Community threads over editorial coverage. The 5WPR AI Platform Citation Source Index 2026 found that Reddit’s community threads have replaced traditional news outlets as the first point of reference in AI-generated responses for many query types.

What this means for brand reputation

A reputation program that ignores what is said on Reddit and the relevant review platforms leaves one of the most influential source categories unmanaged. The engines surface whatever is there, positive or negative, with the same confidence they give to press coverage. Monitoring these communities, and knowing which threads get retrieved for brand-relevant prompts, is a direct input to any serious AI reputation program.
