How does schema markup affect AI visibility?
Schema markup gives AI engines machine-readable signals about content type, authorship, entity context, and structure. Pages with proper schema (Organization, Person, Article, FAQPage) are cited more confidently because the markup removes ambiguity the engine would otherwise have to resolve from text and HTML alone.
Schema markup is a direct input to the entity systems behind AI responses. When a page carries structured data, the engine knows what type of thing it is reading about, who created it, and how it connects to known entities, without guessing from prose. Pages without schema force the engine to infer, which lowers both confidence and citation rates.
Schema types that matter for AI reputation work

- Tells the engine which entity the page represents. Include
sameAslinks to the company’s Wikidata entry, Wikipedia article, LinkedIn page, and any regulatory or professional registry entry. On an owned domain, this is the most important step for entity disambiguation. - Person
- Used on executive biography pages. Add
sameAslinks to each executive’s Wikipedia article and Wikidata Q-ID where available. Without it, the engine may confuse one executive with another of the same name or fail to connect the bio to the parent organization. - Article
- Carries named authorship and a publication date. These tell the engine who wrote the content and how recent it is, both of which weight toward citation confidence for news and thought-leadership content.
- FAQPage
- Makes question-and-answer pairs explicitly extractable. Google retired FAQ rich results from the SERP in May 2026, but FAQPage markup still signals Q&A structure to AI engines that synthesize answers from the page. It remains a useful extraction signal even without the visual accordion in search results.
Why missing or sloppy schema hurts
Incomplete schema is a common reason AI engines get basic facts wrong about a brand. When the engine cannot attach a page to a known entity with confidence, it either drops the page from the synthesis or leans on whatever other sources give it more certainty, often third-party descriptions the brand does not control. For a reputation program, schema is one of the highest-leverage technical fixes on owned properties, because it sits between what the engine can read and what the brand wants it to say.
